Best Sleeping Positions During Pregnancy to Ensure Fetal Safety

Tim Kelas Antenatal & Postnatal

Upon approaching the third trimester, sleeping positions transcend comfort—they become a matter of physiological fetal safety.

Why Back-Sleeping is Dangerous

Lying flat on your back (supine position) after Week 28 forces the heavy uterus to compress the Inferior Vena Cava (IVC), the primary vein circulating blood to the maternal heart.

This severely stifles the oxygenated blood supply moving into the placenta, presenting an astronomical increase in stillbirth risks.

The “Sleep On Side” (SOS) Left Position

Sleeping exclusively on your left side relieves pressure off the liver (situated on the right) and vastly clears vascular pathways. Employing a maternity body pillow wedged between the knees and tucked behind the lumbar offers superior comfort.
