Approaching Labor Symptoms: Water Breaking vs Discharge
• Tim Kelas Antenatal & Postnatal
Deciphering standard bodily secretions from obstetrical emergency indicators prevents fatal delivery delays.
Sign 1: Ruptured Membranes (Water Breaking)
Amniotic fluid presents as warm, clear, continuous streams of liquid that you cannot clench to stop (unlike urine). It typically has no foul odor. Proceed immediately to the hospital’s Patient Admission Centre (PAC).
Sign 2: ‘Bloody Show’ (Mucus Plug)
A thick, jelly-like plug colored deep red or brown scaling from the cervix. This dislodgment indicates immediate cervical dilation has initiated.
Sign 3: Unyielding Consistent Contractions
False contractions (Braxton Hicks) subside with rest. True active labor manifests via severely painful, tightening waves originating from the lower back expanding towards the groin, repeating precisely (e.g., every 10 minutes).
